About the project
In 2020, VKhUTEMAS – the Higher Art and Technical Studios – celebrated its 100th anniversary. This unique school of art, architecture and design has long played a significant role in the country's art life. The project included the design of VKhUTEMAS museum to be erected in place of an unfinished building on the grounds of the Moscow Architectural Institute. The hardest challenge was fitting it into a fairly tight enclosed space surrounded by historical buildings. The museum has an above-ground part with a simple layout and a multi-level underground part. The whole building is designed as a single large staircase, its levels serving as exhibition spaces for pieces made by VKhUTEMAS based artists.
